It was 8PM at SMX Convention Center when someone yielded her name from the busy crowd. Standing and chilling with her model friends is Asia’s Next Top Model finalist Katarina Rodriguez. The first thing that flashed in my mind is that “Wow, a Disney Princess turned fashion model”. She carries herself well and an enviable face is just a peek of who she is.

I was fortunate enough to get up close and personal to the new model on the block in Philippine fashion. She’s been really polite to smile and grant me a sudden interview while waiting for the last show.
Before you join Asia’s Next Top Model, have you already thought of being a model?
I didn’t because I was actually an athlete. I ran track and field for Dela Salle. You show know! (laughs) So I was really focusing on track running and school.
What do you think is the biggest advantage of being a Lassalian and an athlete in the modelling world?
I think it gives me a broader market. I can really connect and relate to people from ages, you know like elementary, high school and universities because I do a sport that they can do when you start walking. With that I have a bigger market so I can attract more people who will be interested in working with me.
Are you going to do the Albert Andrada show later?
I’m not actually. But Jodilly is and then one of my good friends is so I’m going to watch. I’ve done couple of shows already. I was not actually supposed to here but I ended up cancelling my trip so I decided to watch instead.
What is your summer destination this season?
This summer, I was in Boracay and then I was in Indonesia.
What are your best features that would attract fashionistas in the Philippines?
I do think it’s my eyebrows and my eyes that’s what they say and my passion and enthusiasm for modelling.
Who are your beauty icons?
I’m a really big fan when it comes to modelling with Cara Delivigne. I have to say Brooke Shields as well –the eyebrows because I can connect to that, and then of course Kate Moss because of the height.
Can you tell me about your outfit and personal style?
For my outfit right now, usually when I go to the shoots or before a show I just really want to be as comfortable as I can. Of course I have to have my Nikes. This are shorts from Billabong – they are just very comfortable. This top is easy to take off over the hair because you have big hairstyle and the beanie to cover all the hairspray from the show. I guess very laid back casual sporty.
How about a beauty secret that you want to dish out to all of your fans?
I do use Ponds BB cream to cover anything that is out of the ordinary.
What is it on Asia’s Next Top Model that you have learned that you can actually take in the real world of modelling?
The biggest thing I’ve Iearned that I have said many, many times is that it does not matter if you are stick thin, if you’re stereotypically tall and it really does not matter if you are beautiful. A successful model is created by how you deliver what the client, photographer, and the director through the attitude and the character that they want. If you can’t deliver that you won’t be successful no matter how beautiful, tall or thin you are. Those are plus attributes, but what they are looking for is how you create the vibe, aura and the energy.
Bless the models!
